The Rock, Bury Shortlisted for Prestigious Award
15/04/24As we near practical completion at our supported living development at The Rock in Bury, what better way to celebrate than being shortlisted for an award!
Together with Ollier Smurthwaite Architects, we have been shortlisted by the prestigious 2024 Housing Design Awards and will find out if we are a winner later this year.
Providing a much-needed step-down facility for young adults in the town centre, this scheme also represents a successful reuse and retention of a historic building, adding urban regeneration value to Bury where development is less common and viability is more challenging. The scheme also stands out for its energy efficiency and highly sustainable timber frame, which was constructed off-site. A small scheme, the building enjoys a communal green garden space, yet is on the doorstep to the town centre’s amenities.
The period building, once a pub on the ground floor with storage space on the upper floors, has been considerately repurposed as ten 1-bed apartments and three 1-bed mews homes, all for supported living use, with modern interior fit out that is conducive to mental health treatment and recovery. The apartments have been designed to enable residents to have privacy and security within their individual apartments, whilst promoting social integration with access to the central communal garden.
The building’s stunning period style has been retained where possible, with original style windows reinstated, and the historic staircase internally.
21 Living managing director, Luke Powell, congratulated the team. He said: “This significant nomination is testament to the hard work and dedication of everyone involved in the project. We are honoured to be recognised for our commitment to innovative and thoughtful design, and continue to focus on this as a key business ambition. Fingers crossed for the final results!”
The scheme is being delivered in conjunction with Inclusion Housing, Northern Healthcare Bury Council, andRedSide.
The Housing Design Awards are promoted by RICS, RIBA and RTPI and seek to identify innovative housing design that can be replicated to help improve and inspire residential developments across the UK and beyond.
