A Stockport Renaissance: It’s music to our ears
19/05/25For many years, Stockport town, one of Greater Manchester’s largest economies, had taken a back seat whilst Manchester grew in stature and attracted the brands and businesses expanding in the North.
But not anymore.
With so much originality to offer, its leaders and community have taken action and are shining the stage lights back on Stockport.
Rich heritage
Stockport is borne out of industry – textiles, media, retail, food and drink…and music! Dating back as far as the Industrial Revolution, the town has been an influential powerhouse and is so rich in heritage and culture, it’s easy to understand its recent rapid resurgence as one of the best places to live in the region. It just needed the right people with forward-thinking ambitions to take a hold.
Low-key music powerhouse
Lesser known, yet integral to Stockport’s personality and culture, is its musical influence.
Famous musicians and bands debuted in Stockport’s venues, including Hendrix at the Sinking Ship in 1967to Blossoms headlining Edgeley Park, with regular contributors to the growing music scene playing in Stockport’s SK1 Records, MOB6B and BRUK.
Ian Curtis came from Macclesfield, a market town south of Stockport. He played with his band, Joy Division at Strawberry Studios, along with an iconic line-up of The Ramones, 10cc, Neil Sedaka, Barclay James Harvest, The Smiths, The Stone Roses, The Moody Blues, Paul McCartney, Wax and Cliff Richard over the years!
Building on music
Its music legacy will ‘play’ on in Stockport’s redevelopment, as an integral part of the town’s culture and infrastructure. These industries synonymous with the towns make-up are integral to its resurgence as a place to live and work, and we are excited to support this renaissance. Some of the original studios and venues exist in the town’s infrastructure and will help define the renaissance of these districts.
Well connected
The town remains an efficient commuter interchange in the North, attracting people to live and travel around the town with its large multi-platform train station, a comprehensive bus service to and from suburban towns and villages. It is also supported by out-of-town retail and leisure parks, with many businesses still established and headquartered in Stockport.
With so much passion and history, Stockport is already booming, and as a small developer playing a part in the town’s success, we look forward to announcing plans to restore the fabric and heart of the town’s culture.
